  1. Ask for references and check them out.
  2. Enquire about builders qualifications – which qualifications do they & their contractors have?
  3. Check out the companies insurance.
  4. Always ask for a detailed quote. Which specifies exactly what is covered / is not covered within the quote.
  5. Check whether the work comes with any guarantees.
  6. Agree phases of work and stage payments
  7. Draw up a written agreement which both parties agree and understand.
  8. Check that the works carried out come with the required certificates, i.e Double glazing, electric works etc.
  9. Do as much research as possible into the company i.e. speak to previous customers, internet searches.
